West Mangala Valles This scene covers the boundary scarp between the ancient cratered highlands and the northern plains of Mars over an area west of Mangala Valles (latitude -8 degrees to -4 degrees, longitude 156 degrees to 159 degrees). The sedimentary deposits north of the highlands in Amazonis Planitia may consist of pyroclastic rocks or paleo-polar deposits. Ancient river channels cut the cratered highlands. (North is to the left.) Viking Orbiter picture numbers are: 451S01-09, 452S01-06, 454S09-12. Image-processing was done by Alfred McEwen, U.S. Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Arizona.
